01 - Who is Deriv, really?
Deriv is an international multi-asset broker founded in 1999 (originally as Binary.com, rebranded to Deriv in 2020) and operating through multiple entities registered in Malta, Vanuatu, British Virgin Islands, Labuan, and Mauritius. The company is one of the oldest online trading platforms in the world, with 25+ years of operational history.
What most Kenyan readers don't realise is that Deriv operates through multiple legal entities depending on your jurisdiction. Kenyan clients are typically onboarded to the Vanuatu or BVI entities, which hold offshore licenses. The Malta entity (Deriv Investments Malta Ltd) holds an MFSA license but serves EU clients under MiFID regulations - Kenyan traders do not receive these protections.
Deriv differentiates itself through direct M-Pesa integration, synthetic indices (unique proprietary instruments), and multiple trading platforms (DTrader, DMT5, SmartTrader, DBot, Deriv Go). The platform offers 190+ instruments across forex, crypto, commodities, stocks, and synthetic indices.

Over the past six years at Kenya Forex Firm, I have personally opened and funded accounts with more than 60 offshore brokers. Deriv is one of only three brokers that has survived multiple re-tests with no major issues, which tells you something about its operational durability - even if its regulatory architecture for Kenya remains offshore.
02 - Regulation & licenses - the full picture
Let's put the regulatory picture on the table in plain English, because Deriv's regulatory structure is more complex than most brokers - and more important to understand.
Multiple international licenses
Deriv holds licenses from five different regulatory authorities:
- Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) - License number C 70156. This is a Tier-1 EU regulator with investor compensation up to €20,000. However, this license only covers EU clients under MiFID regulations.
- Vanuatu Financial Services Commission (VFSC) - Offshore regulator with minimal capital requirements. Kenyan clients are typically onboarded here.
- British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission (BVI FSC) - Another offshore regulator. Some Kenyan clients may be onboarded here.
- Labuan Financial Services Authority (Labuan FSA) - Malaysian offshore regulator.
- Mauritius Financial Services Commission (FSC) - African offshore regulator.
This is the strongest regulatory profile of any offshore broker I've tested. However, it's critical to understand that Kenyan clients do not receive EU regulatory protections. The MFSA license is real and valuable, but it doesn't apply to you.
"Deriv's regulatory structure is the most comprehensive I've seen in the offshore space. Multiple licenses across multiple jurisdictions show operational maturity. But Kenyan traders need to understand they're on the offshore entities, not the EU entity. The MFSA protections don't reach Nairobi."- Patrick Mahinge, in a 2024 Kenya Forex Firm editorial
What about Kenya's Capital Markets Authority (CMA)?
The CMA has no licensing regime for binary options. No broker offering binaries to Kenyan clients holds a CMA licence for that product, Deriv included. The CMA has repeatedly warned the public against unlicensed online trading platforms. Trading with an offshore broker is not itself a criminal offence for an individual, but if the broker freezes your funds or disappears, no Kenyan authority can recover your money.
My honest recommendation: Deriv's regulatory profile is the strongest in the offshore binary space, but Kenyan clients still sit on offshore entities. The multiple licenses show operational maturity and reduce the risk of sudden closure, but they don't provide the same protections as EU/UK regulation. Size your positions accordingly - never risk money you cannot afford to lose entirely.
03 - Account types explained
Deriv offers two main account types. Here is what each one actually does in practice.
Demo account - the one you should open first
Every new visitor gets a free demo account loaded with $10,000 in virtual funds. There is no time limit, the balance can be refilled as often as you like, and - critically - the demo gives you access to all 190+ instruments and every platform feature including synthetic indices. The demo runs on real market prices, so fills, spreads and slippage behave like the live account.
I spent the first 14 days of my audit exclusively on the demo before depositing real money. That discipline saved me from two strategies that looked great on paper but fell apart under live execution conditions - especially on synthetic indices, which behave differently from real markets. If you are reading this review, do the same.
Real account - the standard live account
Opens with a $5 minimum deposit (about KES 645 at the October 2026 reference rate of 1 USD = KES 129.30) - one of the lowest in the industry. You get access to all instruments, standard payouts (up to 90%), and all five trading platforms. There are no monthly fees, no inactivity fees, and no account-maintenance charges of any kind. This is the account 95% of Kenyan traders will use.
Deriv does not offer a traditional "VIP account" like some competitors. Instead, higher-volume traders may receive personalized support and better conditions through direct negotiation with the support team. But for most traders, the standard account is all you need.
Start with the free demo - no deposit required
Practice on real market prices with $10,000 virtual funds. No credit card, no M-Pesa, no risk.
04 - Registration & KYC - what I went through
Signing up took me under three minutes. The form asks for email, password, currency (USD recommended for Kenyan traders to avoid conversion fees), and country. You land immediately on the platform with a demo account. No credit card, no ID, no friction.
The friction comes later. Before you can withdraw - and in my experience, before some deposit methods unlock - you must complete KYC verification. This means uploading:
- A government-issued photo ID (Kenyan national ID, passport, or driving permit)
- Proof of address (utility bill, bank statement, or Safaricom statement dated within the last three months)
My verification was approved in 20 hours - faster than most brokers I've tested. Deriv claims verification usually takes less than 24 hours, and my experience confirmed this. The variance seems to depend on document quality - blurry photos get bounced. Use good lighting, all four corners visible, and a colour scan rather than a phone photo of a printed document if you can.

My suggestion: complete KYC the moment you sign up, even before you deposit. When you eventually want to withdraw - especially your first withdrawal - you do not want to be waiting on document review while your profits sit in limbo.
05 - Deposits & M-Pesa - how my KES 20,000 got in
Here's where Deriv genuinely differentiates itself: direct M-Pesa integration. Unlike most brokers that only support M-Pesa through third-party agents, Deriv allows direct transfers from your Safaricom wallet to your trading account.
My actual deposit journey
I deposited KES 20,000 in two tranches:
- Tranche 1 - KES 10,000 (~$77) via direct M-Pesa. I selected M-Pesa from the deposit options in the Deriv cashier, entered my Safaricom phone number, and received an STK push on my phone. I confirmed the transaction with my M-Pesa PIN, and the funds appeared in my trading balance in 6 minutes.
- Tranche 2 - KES 10,000 (~$77) via Visa card. Processed instantly, no fees.
Both deposits were fee-free. The direct M-Pesa integration is a genuine advantage - no middlemen, no agent delays, no risk of sending money to the wrong number. This is the most convenient funding route I've tested for Kenyan traders, alongside Pocket Option.
Other deposit methods available in Kenya
- M-Pesa (direct) - 6 minutes in our test, no fee, $5 minimum
- Visa / Mastercard - instant, no fee, $10 minimum
- Bank wire transfer - 1–3 business days, possible correspondent bank fees
- Cryptocurrency (BTC, ETH, LTC, USDT) - 10–60 minutes depending on network congestion
- Skrill, Neteller, Perfect Money - e-wallet options, instant
- Deriv P2P - peer-to-peer transfers with other Deriv users
Fund your account from KES 645
Minimum deposit $5 via direct M-Pesa, card, crypto or wire. First step: open the free demo.
06 - Withdrawals, timed end-to-end
This is the section I care about most, because a broker that pays in fast but pays out slow is a loan shark wearing a trading costume. Here is what actually happened during my 60-day audit:
Both M-Pesa withdrawals cleared into my Safaricom wallet without issues. Deriv claims that most withdrawals are processed within 30 minutes to 2 hours, and my tests confirmed this - the 45-minute and 1 hour 20 minute withdrawals were typical. This is significantly faster than most competitors and on par with Pocket Option.
Important withdrawal rules
- Zero withdrawal fees. Unlike IQ Option's 2% fee after the first free monthly withdrawal, Deriv charges nothing on withdrawals regardless of method or frequency. This is genuinely generous.
- Withdrawals go back to the deposit method. If you deposited via M-Pesa, your withdrawal goes to M-Pesa. If via card, it goes back to the card. This is an anti-money-laundering requirement, not Deriv being difficult.
- Minimum withdrawal is $5 for M-Pesa, $10 for other methods. Anything below this will be rejected.
- Bonus money has turnover requirements. If you accepted a deposit bonus, you must trade a certain volume before withdrawing the bonus portion. Read the bonus terms carefully.
My suggestion: Deriv's zero-fee withdrawal policy is genuinely generous - take advantage of it. Withdraw profits regularly rather than letting them compound in your account. The broker's financial health is not your concern; your capital is.
07 - Trading platforms - five options, ranked
Deriv offers five different trading platforms, more than any other broker I've tested. I used all five during the audit. Here is the honest ranking.
1. DTrader - the best one for most traders
DTrader is Deriv's flagship platform for binary options and digital contracts. It's clean, intuitive, and runs well even on a 3G connection in rural Kenya. The interface is designed for quick trade execution with multiple contract types (Rise/Fall, Higher/Lower, Touch/No Touch, etc.). This is the platform I spent 60% of my audit time on.
2. DMT5 (Deriv MetaTrader 5) - for forex and CFD traders
DMT5 is Deriv's version of the industry-standard MetaTrader 5 platform. It offers advanced charting, Expert Advisors (automated trading), and access to forex, synthetic indices, and CFDs. If you're coming from a traditional forex background, this will feel familiar. I used DMT5 for 25% of my audit, primarily for forex and synthetic indices trading.
3. SmartTrader - the legacy platform
SmartTrader is the original Binary.com platform, still available for long-time users. It's more complex than DTrader but offers some advanced contract types not available elsewhere. I used it for 10% of my audit to test specific contract types.
4. DBot - for automated trading
DBot is Deriv's drag-and-drop bot builder for creating automated trading strategies without coding. It's genuinely useful for traders who want to automate simple strategies. I built three test bots during the audit - two were profitable, one was not.
5. Deriv Go - mobile-only
Deriv Go is a simplified mobile app for quick trading on the go. It's less feature-rich than the web platforms but useful for monitoring positions and executing quick trades. Available on both iOS and Android.
My recommendation: Start with DTrader for binary options and digital contracts. If you want to trade forex or use automated strategies, move to DMT5. The other platforms are useful for specific use cases but not necessary for most traders.
08 - Markets & instruments - 190+ assets, ranked
Deriv's asset shelf is comprehensive, covering everything from traditional forex to unique synthetic indices. Here is the breakdown:
Forex is the tightest market - EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY and the other majors run payouts of up to 90% on binary options during the London–New York overlap. Spreads on forex CFDs average 0.5-1.0 pips on majors, which is competitive for an offshore broker.
Cryptocurrencies trade 24/7, including weekends, with payouts around 85-90% on BTC/USD and ETH/USD. Stocks and indices trade during their underlying exchange hours - so NYSE-listed names are only available during the US session (4:30 PM to 11:00 PM EAT).
The real differentiator is synthetic indices - covered in the next section.
09 - Synthetic indices - Deriv's unique offering
This is where Deriv genuinely differentiates itself from every other broker on this list. Synthetic indices are proprietary trading instruments that simulate real market behavior using cryptographically secure random number generators. They are exclusive to Deriv - you cannot trade them anywhere else.
Types of synthetic indices
- Volatility Indices - Simulate market volatility with constant volatility levels (10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%). These trade 24/7 including weekends.
- Boom and Crash Indices - Feature predictable spike patterns. Boom indices have gradual downward movement with sudden upward spikes. Crash indices have gradual upward movement with sudden downward drops. Available in multiple timeframes (Boom 300, Boom 500, Boom 1000, etc.).
- Step Indices - Move in fixed step sizes, useful for range trading strategies.
- Jump Indices - Simulate markets with sudden jumps in price.
- Range Break Indices - Designed to break out of consolidation ranges.
Why trade synthetic indices?
Synthetic indices offer several advantages:
- 24/7 trading - including weekends and holidays, when traditional markets are closed
- Consistent volatility - no gaps, no news events, no market open/close volatility
- Predictable patterns - especially Boom and Crash indices, which have mathematically defined behavior
- No slippage - fills are guaranteed at the quoted price
The reality check
Synthetic indices are not real markets. They are generated by Deriv's algorithms. This means:
- You are trading against Deriv, not against other market participants
- The behavior is simulated, not driven by real supply and demand
- Strategies that work on synthetic indices may not translate to real markets
During my audit, I spent 30% of my trades on synthetic indices, primarily Volatility 100 and Boom 1000. The experience was genuinely different from trading real markets - more predictable, less emotional, but also less realistic. I made money on synthetic indices, but I'm not confident those strategies would work on real forex pairs.
My suggestion: Synthetic indices are a genuine innovation and worth exploring, especially for weekend trading. But treat them as a separate asset class from real markets. Don't assume that success on synthetic indices translates to success on forex or stocks.
10 - Fees, payouts & leverage - the full cost picture
Deriv's fee structure is transparent and competitive. Here is what you actually pay:
Deposits & withdrawals
- Deposits: Free on all methods. No hidden conversion fees beyond the standard Safaricom or card-issuer charges.
- Withdrawals: Free on all methods, all the time. No monthly caps, no percentage fees. This is genuinely generous.
Payouts on binary options
On binary options, Deriv does not charge a separate commission. The cost is built into the payout percentage - a 90% payout means you keep 90% of your stake on a winning trade, and the broker's 10% edge is the fee. During my audit, I logged an average payout of 87.3% on binary options across 200+ trades. This is competitive but slightly lower than Pocket Option or Quotex.
Spreads on forex and CFDs
On forex CFDs, Deriv charges spreads rather than commissions. EUR/USD averaged 0.6 pips during my London-session tests, which is competitive for an offshore broker. Synthetic indices have fixed spreads that vary by instrument.
Leverage
Deriv offers leverage of up to 1:1000 on forex and synthetic indices - far above the 1:30 cap that EU clients receive under CySEC rules. This is one of the concrete benefits of being offshore, but it is also one of the concrete dangers. High leverage amplifies losses as much as gains. My honest advice: use no more than 1:30 leverage regardless of what the platform allows, and size your positions so that a single loss never exceeds 1–2% of your account.
Other fees
- Inactivity fee: None. Deriv does not charge for account inactivity.
- Currency conversion: 2% fee if your account currency differs from the instrument currency. Open a USD account to avoid this entirely.
- Overnight swaps (CFDs only): Charged on positions held past the daily rollover. Not applicable to binary options.
11 - The demo account - your most underrated tool
I cannot overstate how important Deriv's demo account is. It is free, unlimited in duration, refillable on demand, and gives you access to 190+ instruments and every platform feature including synthetic indices. The demo runs on real market prices, so the fills, spreads and slippage you experience are genuine.
During my audit, I used the demo to:
- Test four different strategies before risking real money
- Measure actual payout percentages across 40+ instruments at different times of day
- Stress-test synthetic indices behavior over 50+ demo trades
- Build and test three automated bots on DBot
Most brokers offer demos that expire after 7 or 14 days, or that restrict you to a handful of instruments. Deriv's demo does neither. Use it aggressively before you deposit a single shilling.
12 - Customer support - 24/7 in multiple languages
Deriv offers 24/7 live chat, email support, and phone support in multiple languages. During my audit, I opened 12 support tickets at various times, including three at 2 AM EAT on a Saturday. Here is what I found:
- Live chat: Average response time was 2 minutes 15 seconds during business hours, and 12 minutes during off-hours. Responses were knowledgeable and honest - agents did not push deposits or dodge my harder questions about regulation.
- Email: Replies came within 3–5 hours on weekdays, and 8–12 hours on weekends.
- Phone: Available for verified accounts. I received a callback within 8 minutes of requesting one.
The support team is a genuine strength of Deriv. They are better-trained, more honest, and faster than most offshore brokers I have tested. The 24/7 live chat is a real advantage - if you trade weekends heavily, you will rarely hit a support wall.
Deriv also offers comprehensive educational resources including webinars, tutorials, market analysis, and a trading academy. The quality is better than average for an offshore broker, though not as structured as Olymp Trade's academy.
13 - Pros & cons - the uncomfortable summary
What worked
- Strongest regulatory profile in offshore binary space - multiple international licenses

- Five trading platforms - more choice than any competitor
